From a managers point of view the Castle Pool is a nightmare! It is a great pool for trout with good casting space. The Pool lies directly below a rapid and a long fast run. As a result the water accelerates and can be very quick. Some boulders were added to break up the flow, but most were washed out in winter floods. One which was the size of a mini bus was never seen again! The banks were repaired in the late eighties with stone. More recently gravel and top soil was added to bind the stone together and to offer a more stable foothold. It is actually now developing into quite a nice pool, but needs to erode further so that the river has mor space and is thus able to slow down. Extra boulders are being added so as to start this process.

The Castle pool used to be a great salmon pool. In modern times the angler often gives it a miss as its reputation proceeds it! This should not always be the case. The tail of the pool has developed some interesting pots which can be well worth exploring as one angler who took 2 salmon before lunch time can testify. The pool also offers easy access as a car can be brought right to the bank.
