Fishing
Guides are known as "Ghillies" in Scotland. You
will also find plenty of fly-fishing and casting
instructors in the area who offer both group and
individual instruction.
Tuition and Instruction
Beginners and experts alike can
benefit from instruction. If you have never tried
fishing before, it only takes about half a day
to pick up sufficient skills to stand a reasonable
chance of catching a fish on the fly. Without
tuition you frankly stand no chance! Fishing
with bait and spinning rods is very easy to
learn.
Instruction can be in a group
or given individually (at extra cost) so be careful
what you are asking for. |

Ghillies
and Guides
A ghillie (also spelt gillie)
is a vital ingredient to a successful day on the
river. The word actually means "man servant" in
Gaelic. His/Her (there are a few!) first priority
however, is to look after your safety - namely
to make sure you don't fall into a deep hole or
get swept away.
Then he will try to ensure that
you catch fish (his tip depends on it!). This
can only be done by intimately understanding the
beat, which is achieved by living and working
on the river day after day through constant observation.
Only then can you understand the lies and how
they attract fish in different water conditions.
If you are not familiar with a beat you would
be well advised to take local advice: |

the real professionals get hold of Jock. He is not
only

to his
guests, providing a total service, but is also a
long standing servant to the river with his conservation
projects.

from one
of the
best.
His
beat sits nicely in the middle river to take advantage
of most flows. This year he is blessed with a new
assistant ghillie in Colin, who is equally competent
and caring.
Top value for money.
