Description of the River Eden

The River Eden in Fife is a salmon and brown trout river over 20 miles long and flows from Burnside near Loch Leven across the Howe of Fife through the market town of Cupar to Guardbridge into the Eden Estuary and the North Sea.  The lower reaches above Cupar are heavily abstracted and some of it is canalized for agriculture, but from Springfield downstream to Cupar it resembles a chalk stream in appearance.

The Eden Angling Association has approximately 16 miles of mainly double bank fishing for salmon, sea trout and brown trout. The River Eden has a slightly longer salmon season (ending October 31st) than most of the region administered by the Tay District Salmon Fisheries Board.  The river used to be very polluted, but salmon numbers have been gradually increasing helped by stockings done by the Board.  The estuary offers sea trout fishing, but there are mud flats.

Tributaries include Ceres Burn which has an impassable falls 1 mile upstream of the confluence.
