Description

Salmon fishing on the Point beat is to be found at the confluence of the Rivers Lyon and Tay, The Point Beat is a fly only water, with spinning allowed in high water. Fishing is from the south bank.

The Point is the most productive of the Upper Tay pools for salmon. It lies on the confluence of the River Tay and the River Lyon. Whereas the Lyon is a true spate river the Tay is loch fed, so the angler (and the fish) have the best of both worlds. The Tay offers clear water and steady flows while the Lyon has good spates and freshets from the higher up.Wadding is easy and only a short cast is required to get your fly into some great lies. A fishing hut offers shelter during inclemment weather. Fishing is not permitted from the north bank. This ensures that lies close to this bank remain undisturbed. The Junction Pool is directly below the confluence. It is reached by wadding from the south bank and thus becomes inaccessible in high water. With two rivers joining just above it great gravel banks and runs have formed. A new feature is currently forming at the tail of the pool which may well hold fish in future. Millers Bed is a pool which was heavily engineered in the past. A submerged wall runs through the middle of the pool which the very brave might attempt to wade. High trees give good shelter from westely winds and in the summer the banks are full of wild orchids. It fishes well in all conditions. In high water there are good slacks at the tail. Pipers is a rugged pool. It is full of large boulders which fish love. Much can be fished from the bank and wadding is not recommended for beginners. The fly on a double hander works well in this pool. It fishes best in low and medium water. Shepherds is a long gravelly pool with several croys on the north bank. In the tail a number of huge boulders were added in 1996 to provide extra lies.
