Scourie Hotel

Loch More

Scourie Hotel

Built by the second Duke Of Sutherland as a coaching inn, the hotel stands on the site of an old fortified house looking towards the sheltered waters and white sands of Scourie bay. In the shieling below nestle the gable-stepped houses of Scourie village. Beyond spreads the famed empty quarter of Western Sutherland, a lunar landscape of lochs and Mountains rising into a wilderness sky.

To connoisseurs of game fishing there is simply nothing to compare to the 25,000 acres of Loch, River and Hill Loch fishing held for the guests of Scourie Hotel. The Hotel has 36 fishing beats held exclusively for guests plus 3 beats on Loch Stack and Loch More for sea trout and salmon. Additional salmon fishing is taken on local salmon rivers.

Loch Stack enjoyed an enviable reputation as one of the foremost Sea Trout fisheries in Scotland. At that time, fish over 10 lbs were not uncommon and numbers caught ran into many hundreds per season. Fishing on Loch Stack is from a drifting boat only, with a ghillie being a mandatory requirement. The loch enjoys large areas of submerged rocks and skerries which all harbour the Salmon and Trout as do burn mouths.

Loch More is a longer thinner loch than Stack, with greater expanses of deeper water in the middle section. As a result, fishing takes place at either end of the loch with two beats allocated named Smiddy and Kinloch. Fishing is available on both but the hotel recommends the Kinloch end in preference. Salmon tend to pass the Smiddy end without stopping. Brown Trout and Char may be taken with a Brown Trout of 9 lbs being caught on the dap in the nineties. Char would be of a size similar to Loch Stack.

Duart System – Lower Duart and Upper Duart.. It includes a series of lochs (all of which have boats) and short rivers or burns making it a unique and fascinating experience to fish. It has many scenic delights not least of which is the falls pool. The lochs, burns and river stretches contain a mixture of Salmon and Brown Trout and, in recent years, Sea Trout have also been taken.

In addition the Hotel has access to dozens of hill lochs in the area for brown trout fishing.
