Description of the River Endrick Water

The Endrick Water or River Endrick in Stirlingshire starts in the Fintry hills as the Burnfoot Burn and Backside Burn which combine and flow 20 miles into the eastern end of Loch Lomond near Balmaha. The River Endrick offers good salmon and sea trout fishing.

The Loch Lomond Angling Improvement Association have extensive exclusive stretches reserved for full members. Other private stretches, mostly on the lower reaches, allow access to their member.  Mostly fly only.

Start of the River Endrick? The shallow pool below the dam is a result of rain water and a little leakage from a sluice, not overflow. Despite a high volume of flow coming down the Endrick we can see there is no flow over the dam at all. The river effectively stops here and is subject to total abstraction by the Carron system through a sluice on the far side of the dam.

Spectacular series of waterfalls on the Endrick Water that drop approx. 30m over a fault. This photo was taken after days of heavy rainfall. At other times the Loup is a disappointment due to total abstraction of its flow further upstream at a dam above the Carron Reservoir. On this occasion the flow was restored to near its natural state by a combination of heavy contributions from burns and some compensation water from the Carron abstraction system.
